If You Need to Start a Call:

  1. After connecting with the other party, put them on hold and add a call to 1-800-497-8308.
  2. Enter your 10-digit Pin or call from a registered phone number (Pinless).
  3. Press “1” for Spanish, or “2” for any other language; when prompted, say the name of the language (If you need assistance, press “0” or stay on the line to speak with a representative).
  4. Follow the automated instructions and press the number that corresponds to your requested language.
    1. Once the interpreter is connected, brief him or her on what you wish to accomplish and give them any special instruction.
    Note: When placing a call to a non-English speaker, begin at Step 2. If you need assistance placing a call to a non-English speaker, please inform the interpreter of that fact before calling the third party.
  5. Say “END OF CALL” to the Interpreter when the call is completed.

If You are Already in a Call:

  1. Place the other party on conference hold and dial 1-800-497-8308.
  2. Enter your 10-digit Pin or call from a registered phone number (Pinless).
  3. Press “1” for Spanish, or “2” for any other language; when prompted, say the name of the language (If you need assistance, press “0” or stay on the line to speak with a representative).
  4. Follow the automated instructions and press the number that corresponds to your requested language.
    1. Once the interpreter is connected, brief him or her on what you wish to accomplish and give them any special instruction.
    2. Using three-way calling, connect the interpreter and the non-English speaker to begin your conversation.
    Note: When placing a call to a non-English speaker, begin at Step 2. If you need assistance placing a call to a non-English speaker, please inform the interpreter of that fact before calling the third party.
  5. Say “END OF CALL” to the Interpreter when the call is completed.

If You are Face-to-Face:

  1. Dial 1-800-497-8308.
  2. Enter your 10-digit PIN.
  3. Follow the automated instructions, pressing the number that corresponds to your requested language.
  4. When the interpreter is connected, you can use the speakerphone, or pass your handset back and forth, to continue the conversation.

Usage Tips:

  • After you are connected, give the interpreter your name and the non-English speaker’s name. The interpreter is only allowed to give you their own name.
  • Inform the interpreter as to whether the non-English speaker is already on the phone line, or if you will need to dial their number to add them to a three-way conference call. The interpreters are not allowed to place connecting calls for you.
  • If the non-English speaker is with you but you are not using a speakerphone, inform the interpreter that you will be passing a phone back and forth between yourself and the other person.
  • Speak clearly in short phrases, pausing to allow for the interpretation.
  • Ask one question at a time.
  • Use simple language to express your meaning. Remember that slang does not translate.
  • Explain any terms you believe may be unclear.
  • Allow the interpreter to stop you and seek an explanation when necessary and to repeat back to you any critical information that requires clarification.
  • Don’t say anything that you do not want interpreted.
  • If for any reason you get disconnected during a call, please hang up and call again. You may or may not get connected to the same interpreter.
  • All language interpretation sessions are strictly confidential and are never recorded, transcribed or otherwise archived.
